Thanks to the generous donations made by citizens to the Stair Challenge, the stone steps leading up to the museum are being repaired. The money was collected through the efforts of Dusty Pence and given to the City of Hot Springs to facilitate this project.
From the 13 Oct 1921 issue of the HS Star: “The new stairs to the grade school building are now complete and work on the walk from the head of the stairs to the building has begun. Special effort is being made to protect the business building next to the embankment and near the stairs to the grade school.”
Made from local stone, they have no foundation except tamped earth. Repair consists of removing vegetation that has grown in between the stone, replacing missing and damaged stones and then re-pointing the voids. Completion is near, that is to say, we are close to glory!!
